He was born in Tura, Meghalaya but was brought up in Delhi, where he did most of his schooling. Sangma went abroad for his further studies and attained an MBA from Imperial College London. Soon after completing his studies, he began his political career in the late '90s when he was named the campaign manager by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) for his father. Later, he was the Leader of Opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly during 2009-13, post which he took over as the National President of the National People's Party (NPP), founded by his father, following the latter's demise in March 2016. He successfully contested the 2018 Assembly polls from South Tura and was sworn in as Meghalaya's Chief Minister on March 6, 2018. As of 2021, Sangma also holds the Finance portfolio in the Meghalaya government.
